www.dictionary.com defines organized in this way:
or-gan-ized adj [awr-guh-nahyzd]
to systemize; to give structure;
to arrange in a desired pattern or structure
These are wonderful definitions. Nowhere does it say 'must resemble a magazine cover', 'one size fits all' or 'perfectly neat'.
If I were to add a definition, it would be easy to put away, easy to retrieve. While I personally prefer nice, neat, straight lines..this system is not practical for every situation.
I know a man that owns a 1200 square foot garage. The garage is packed with cars, car parts, engine pieces, and a mountain of tools. It is not perfectly neat, and I doubt you will see it on the cover of a Dream Garage. Yet, the owner knows where every single item is. When he needs something, he can quickly and easily find it. That is the definition of organized.
I believe in a few basic organizing rules:
1) Just because it looks nice, doesn't mean it's practical. Items should be easy to put away, easy to retrieve. If the system is not easy, we will let it go . . . right back to the mess we started with.
2) Organizing systems are as individual as people. I am a 5' 3", right handed woman. A system that works for me, would not be practical for a 6' 4" left handed man. Woman and men tend to use, and need different items.
When deciding on an organizing system for yourself, or your children, do as much research as possible. The key is to find a process that works best for you, your lifestyle, and needs.
